Film Photography

Beginner and Intermediate

By the time I began college I had only been introduced to digital cameras, and can’t say I knew how to shoot fully manual. Like my eyes adjusting to the darkroom, I began to understand how each setting affected the final image. With much help and critique from professors and friends, the process was less of a guessing game. Going through the learning process from the basic level taught me not only how this thing worked- this device I had been playing around with for years- but how to problem solve and push what I envision as close to perfection as I can.

‘A Real Hillbilly’ - Award of Excellence 2018

Asheville man.jpg

“A Real Hillbilly,” or “Asheville Man” is a portrait I took in the Spring of 2018 that was entered into the 2018 Milligan Juried Arts Exhibit and won a small cash prize for an Award of Excellence. It is also the first formal recognition I received for my work.

The man stood on the Asheville sidewalk sipping what looked like beer from a semitransparent plastic cup and socializing with a friend when I approached to ask for a picture. Though his partner refused, this man happily obliged, saying something along the lines of “Here, I’ll show you a real hillbilly” before standing against the building.

There is a sister image in the gallery above that I call “Elizabethton Man,” taken on an Elizabethton, TN sidewalk in a similar situation, although the Elizabethton man did not say anything distinguishable... You can probably find him above, based off of my description.
